Auction: Silver and Objects of Vertu
The October silver sale offers a previously unrecorded, interesting, and dated mid-19th century Chinese export silver mug, engraved for the Penang races of 1869. The date of 1869 is of note as this is the same year as the opening of the Suez Canal, which because of the considerable increase in trade in the years to follow saw the port of Penang grow to become the major entry port for British Malaya. Also offered is a very rare Irish Stuart period tankard, by the most prominent maker of late 17th and early 18th century Dublin, Thomas Bolton. In a private collection since 1982, it was subsequently recorded in Thomas Sweeney’s 1995 book Irish Stuart Silver, one of only 78 such tankards listed in the book and the earliest known for Bolton. There is also a 30-lot section of early spoons including several apostle examples, scarce pieces of pre-1800 continental silver including a Maltese teapot from the French Occupation period, one of the oldest teapots known from the island and a distinctly rare survivor in the French manner.
The October sale has a dedicated section for non-European silver, a category for which this department leads the UK market. Ranging from countries including India, China, Burma, Persia, Iraq, and Cambodia.

Auction: Silver and Objects of Vertu
The spring silver sale covers over 500 lots - from the medieval to modern, from across the world. Items of note include fine examples of Iraqi nielloware such as the gold mounted three-piece coffee set by Onaisi, a selection of rare 18th century American Colonial silver headed by a 1740s Boston salver by William Simpson, and a selection of pieces by famed modern Isfahan silversmith Jouzdani bought in 1995.
English silver is comfortably represented, beginning with a Plantagenet diamond point spoon and a pair of fine 'Egyptomamia' salts from the Lonsdale service by premier Regency silversmiths Digby Scott and Benjamin Smith.
